As the Managing Director for Japan, you will be responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the Tokyo and Tochigi branches, ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of both locations, as well as leading expansion efforts within Japan. This role carries full responsibility for all operations, compliance, and performance of the Japan office, including the leadership and growth of all teams to drive business results and achieve strategic objectives.

Responsibilities
Management
- Reporting to the President & Global Executives
- Plan and execute growth strategies in Japan aligned with the global strategy.
- Provide regular updates in English on progress, business developments, and general matters in Japan.
- Ensure compliance with Japanese corporate, labor, and tax laws as well as corporate governance practices.
Team Member & Organizational Performance Management
- Ensure each department operates effectively and meets its functional objectives.
- Grow each department to meet national and international group objectives.
- Conduct personnel evaluations in line with Japanese employment practices, providing constructive feedback and career development support.
- Foster a positive workplace environment, balancing global company culture with Japanese workplace norms.
Project Management & Portfolio Growth
- Plan and execute projects, providing status updates to the President and Global Executives.
- Grow the portfolio of products manufactured or sourced in Japan for the Group.
Group and Supplier Communication
- Ensure smooth communication between the Group and international and Japanese clients and suppliers.
- Facilitate effective collaboration between Japanese teams and global stakeholders.
Strategic Planning Meetings
- Participate in scheduled strategic meetings with the President, Global Executives, and other Managing Directors.
General Management
- Oversee administrative functions to ensure smooth office operations, including finance, insurances, contract management, and compliance with statutory requirements (labor contracts, social insurance, health and safety regulations, and corporate registrations).
Sales and Marketing
Department Leadership & Management
- Oversee the operations and strategic direction of the Sales & Marketing Department.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the team to achieve departmental KPIs and corporate goals.
- Allocate resources effectively and ensure smooth cross-functional communication with other departments.
Domestic Retail Sales Promotion
- Support the Sales team in building and maintaining relationships with distributors and clinics (excluding routine direct sales visits).
- Collaborate with the Marketing team to establish strong relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and secure solid product positioning in the market.
- Prepare for domestic trade shows and carry out promotional activities during events.
- Monitor and manage domestic sales volumes.
- Ensure compliance with Japanese regulations, including the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act (PMD Act), in all marketing and promotional activities.
Corporate Sales (Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic Companies)
- Promote devices (e.g., injection needles) for use with injection drugs.
- Propose integrated sales models where the client’s pharmaceutical products are packaged with our devices.
- Increase engagement with major pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturers regarding existing and new products.
- Enhance awareness of our products in potential new markets and propose OEM product opportunities.
- Maintain strong relationships with existing domestic pharmaceutical clients.
Sales Forecasting
Market Trend Analysis
Communication with Manufacturing- Liaise with the manufacturing team to ensure alignment between production and market needs.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of management experience.
- 10+ years of B-to-B sales experience in pharmaceutical or medical device companies.
- 3+ years of marketing experience in pharmaceutical or medical device companies.
- Proficiency with ERP software (NetSuite, Xero, or similar) and Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Bilingual in Japanese (native level) and English (business level or above).
- Strong understanding of Japanese business practices, negotiation styles, and regulatory environment.
- Proficient in BS and PL with proven ability in budget planning and financial control.
- MBA qualification preferred, or equivalent leadership/management experience.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide teams.
- A results-driven team player who takes initiative and follows through.
- Proven ability to organize, prioritize, and manage tasks with a structured approach.
